Our Jiu-Jitsu foundation’s program is built entirely around practical self-defense, utilizing the principles of Jiu-Jitsu. Our main focus point for our foundations program is prioritizing our ability to get up, get free and get away, because once I can get back to running distance, self-defense begins. The best self-defense is running, okay. That’s the absolute best way for me to defend myself from a situation where I’m under attack, is to get away from the attack, that is always the best situation.
The only time I cannot get away from the attack, realistically speaking, is when somebody gets a hold of me or gets on top of me, and once that happens now, I’m stuck. What we teach in our foundations program, which is a 16-week program, is we have five weeks dedicated to being smushed under someone bigger than you, somebody who’s just trying to stay on top of you, trying they’re utilizing the fact that they’re bigger and heavier trying to keep you down, we teach you how to get out. How do we escape from that? How do we get back to our feet?
We have another five weeks where our primary thing that we’re looking at is how do we stop people from hitting us in the worst possible ways, particularly once we’re stuck on the ground with them.
How do we keep ourselves from getting hit and then again, getting up, getting free and getting away? How do we stop ourselves from getting knocked out?
The last four weeks deal with scenarios in which we’re dealing with someone basically rushing us and surprising us. We’re dealing with how to stop the most common, highest percentage attacks that occur on the feet, we’re learning how to stop the highest percentage holds and situations that occur once we’re off the feet. We do dedicate a certain amount of time to the most important ways to stop someone, but we dedicate about 90 percent of the time to getting up, getting free, getting away. That’s what we’re mostly looking at. Getting to good positions where we can get away, and then I spend about 10 percent looking at, what if I have to stop someone? Because the other side of self-defense is not just defending myself, but sometimes I have to defend others, and in situations where you have to defend others, that implies that someone’s focus is on somebody else. They’re attacking someone else, which leaves them vulnerable to certain techniques and I’m going to teach the highest percentage techniques to take advantage of those situations. How to drive a dominant position so that you can do damage to them and they’re not able to do damage to you and maybe how to choke them unconscious.
Now, the cool thing about Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense is, it doesn’t require a bunch of belief. You don’t have to come in and believe me, you can come in and experience what we do. You will actually be able do things on day one that you can tell, tangibly would make you safer, would get you free, would get you into good situations when you’re stuck in something bad.
That’s one, to me, of the greatest thing about Jiu-Jitsu it is that so purely objective. You never have to take anything on faith, we will actually be able to demonstrate the effectiveness and the usefulness of things, and we practice with in a safe environment. But as you develop your Jiu-Jitsu more and more, we’re going to actually work in resistant situations where people are actually resisting you, not allowing you to just do whatever you want and that’s where you develop the timing and the energy to thrive in real fighting situations and I think you’d be really happy and well served if you come on down to our gym.
We are very friendly to every type of body type, we have people training at our gym that don’t have a leg from the knee down, we have great ways to build and train even if you have an injury, we’re very good at working around that and we have people training of just all possible fitness levels and, yes, training in Jiu-Jitsu helps improve their fitness. But also, we have a class that is super beginner friendly that just allows people to enter at any time no matter what their physical conditions are entering into our program.
