Kung Fu In New Braunfels

So, you’re looking for Kung Fu in the New Braunfels area. Well, good for you for being less of a couch potato than your fellow man and deciding to engage in a physical activity. Good for you, wanting to learn how to fight a little bit.
I think that’s always great; it’s going to do a lot just to boost your own sense of self-confidence.

Kung Fu is really a nebulous topic, there’s so many different styles of that and overall, I actually got into martial arts because of interest in Kung Fu movies and used to love to watch Kung Fu movies. Pretty much everything from any kind of Wu-Tang Clan album where they have those little blurbs at the beginning of their rap songs, these little things from the weird translations and Kung Fu movies were the things that got me really into martial arts.
I used to watch a ton of Kung Fu movies, love Jackie Chan movies and love Bruce Lee movies, and the only thing I would say though, starting off in Kung Fu is just that ultimately, it’s really not real. It’s all most of what you’re seeing in a Kung Fu movie, and I’ve found again and again that’s what attracts people to Kung Fu. They saw it in a movie, they thought it was really cool and what Kung Fu is in movies is a form of what’s called Peking dance and someone like Jackie Chan, he was a Peking dance actor and he learned to perform in Peking dance.

Peking dance is basically martial arts dancing done on stage. They speak in a sing-song voice in between, it’s really kind of hard to describe this really high-pitched sing-song voice and I’ve seen it performed live in Beijing and it’s amazing. It’s actually super amazing to watch, it’s kind of like it’s something akin to a carnival performance really and it’s just very cool. I watch people do this and they’re dancing, it’s a choreographed fight sequence, so they’re able to do all this really cool acrobatic things and, of course, to a certain degree some of the things that they’re doing could translate into having some sort of martial application, some sort of actual application in fighting. I would never assert that it couldn’t be applied but they’re not actually fighting and you’re not watching the way that people actually move in fights at all.
It’s a dance and it’s choreography designed to really entertain people and so when you’re practicing a lot of Kung Fu or Wing Chun or something like that, you’re doing a kind of weird dance that doesn’t translate into real fighting abilities and, if what you want to do is learn to dance, I would recommend to actually go and learn to dance, learn some ballroom dance or some jazz or something that probably has more application. It might even be more fun, rather than learning to dance, believing that you’re learning to fight.

If you want to learn how to fight, it’s not a secret. We know that Jiu-Jitsu works in no rule’s environments, we know when we remove the rules, when we remove the weight classes and we remove time limits, that Jiu-Jitsu becomes one of the most effective fighting forms on the planet.
We’ve known that ever since UFC one. We know that it gives people the ability to get up, get free and get away and actually fight back if that’s what they need to do and it’s really one of the few martial arts that can really make good on the idea. It has real documented video evidence that a smaller person can beat bigger people and that documented evidence is just UFC one. Royce Gracie is the smallest person in a no rules tournament, he’s 180 pounds and he goes, and he beats out people who beats all these people who are on average closer to about 230-240 and they’re actually trained in other fighting disciplines, but they simply cannot handle him. They can’t handle Jiu-Jitsu and Jiu-Jitsu is still super relevant in modern MMA.

I think you should come down and check out our gym and check out Jiu-Jitsu at my gym and see what it’s like. Because if you like Kung Fu because of movies you’ll fit right in with me because I love Kung Fu in movies, but what I found was that all the principles, they were espousing and I actually did train some Kung Fu for a while, that those principles weren’t really realized with Kung Fu.
All that eastern lore and like the kind of eastern philosophy stuff, when you’re doing something that’s a fundamentally fake fighting, you can’t realize principles that relate to life, because life is real fake things don’t lead to a greater grounding in reality. Things grounded in reality are what lead to the realization of bigger principles and that’s what Jiu-Jitsu provides.

I don’t know if there is Kung Fu in New Braunfels, but I think if what you want to learn to do is how to use your body in really powerful ways to overcome people who are bigger than you, you should come and learn Jiu-Jitsu with us.
